Be a Smart Traveler
No matter where you travel, in the U.S. or around the globe...
Carry a Map:
If you're lost or have wandered into an unfamiliar area, this will be a valuable tool.
Blend In:
Stay in a group. Remove wearable IDs like convention badges and name tags when you’re exploring the city.
Be a Safe Rider:
Ask hospitality personnel to call you a cab. In the car, take notice of the company and driver names in case you leave something behind.
Avoid Isolated Areas:
Don't go into public parks alone after dark.
Show Confidence:
Familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Keep your head up and eyes ahead of you.
Stay Connected:
Keep a charged cell phone with you at all times. When using a phone, stay focused on your surroundings.
Don't flaunt it:
Don't show off expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash. Carry credit cards instead of cash.
Keep Track of Important Documents:
Don't keep all your valuables in one place; keep some money and IDs locked in a safe at your hotel.
Be Alert:
Beware of people who approach asking directions or panhandling; keep a polite but safe distance and keep moving. If you feel you're being followed, duck into a store.
Don't Get Picked On:
Pick pockets usually work in groups. Keep your handbag secure at all times and avoid placing it on the ground. Put a rubber band around your wallet and keep it in your front pants pocket.
Yell "Fire!"
If confronted with a dangerous situation, cry out for assistance by yelling "FIRE! FIRE!" instead of "Help!"
In an Emergency:
Follow directions given by fire or police personnel.
