The Schuylkill River Banks
Explore the Schuylkill River Banks
The banks of the Schuylkill River provide residents and visitors a
place to enjoy the outdoors, among the bustle of Center City. Spanning
eight miles and winding through the heart of Philadelphia, Schuylkill
Banks is open year-round for walking, jogging, cycling, picnicking, and
even kayaking. The park stretches along the Schuylkill River and links
the western edge of Center City to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Fairmount Park, and Kelly Drive via the Schuylkill River Park and Trail.
This 1.2-mile land trail follows the river’s curves between the
Philadelphia Museum of Art and Locust Street. With the urban setting of
Philadelphia on one side, and the river on the other, people can't beat
a run along the banks and the safe, off-road connections to Fairmount
Park's east and west river roadways.
In addition to the many aerobic activities, there is a ton of
experiences to enjoy throughout each season. In the spring and summer,
enjoy outdoor movie screenings and concerts, or hop aboard a scenic
river cruise to take in various historic sites. The park is also a
great place to watch the city’s magnificent July 4th fireworks display.
For the fishing fanatics, there is the annual Philly FUN Fishing Fest
held in September by the Philadelphia Water Department, as well as the
Schuylkill Banks Regatta in October, which draws hundreds of
competitive rowers. The Philadelphia Water Works
is not only a great place to learn about America’s first municipal
water delivery system, but a great place to dine as well. Even though
it is cold outside, The Schuylkill Center has a plethora of ways to
enjoy nature. For a list of these activities, visit www.schuylkillcenter.org.
