Begin at the Independence Visitor Center and take a narrated bus or trolley tour. You'll hear all about the city and its history from an expert guide and be able to hop on and off at locations such as the Rodin Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Christ Church. Time: 1.5 hours.
PMA Independence National Historical Park
Next: Explore Independence National Historical Park. America's Most Historic Square Mile is home to dozens of historical sites, including Carpenters' Hall, the President's House and the Liberty Bell Center, where visitor information is available in foreign languages. A stop at the National Constitution Center reveals the story of America's founding. Time: 2 hours.

Next: Explore the area around 3rd & South & sts., a walkable, shady residential area with plenty of restaurants, boutiques and pubs. Choose one of the neighborhood's trendy cafés for lunch. Time: 1.5 hours.

PMA Reading Terminal Market
Next: Browse deli counters and Amish specialties for a mid-day bite atReading Terminal Market. The historic farmers' market is a popular lunch spot offering everything from cheesesteaks to homemade ice cream. Time: 45 minutes.
PMA Elfreth's Alley
Next: Walk down cobblestone Elfreth's Alley. The oldest residential street in the country provides one of the most authentic and captivating examples of Colonial American life. Be sure to stop by the museum and gift shop in House 124 for a guided tour. Time: 1 hour.

Next: Visit the Betsy Ross House and learn about the famous American legend of Betsy Ross, who is said to have sewed the United States' first flag. The historic Colonial home features a gift shop and costumed characters who bring 18th-century America to life. Time: 30 minutes.

Next: Browse Old City's art galleries, design studios and rare shops along 2nd and 3rd sts. for vintage clothing, collectible art, decorative pieces and much more. Be sure to look at the posted menus at restaurants along the way and choose one to return to for dinner later. The area is home to many hip restaurants, with flavors ranging from sushi to Latin and Mediterranean fare, and you'll also find classic American steak houses and brew pubs. Time: 4 hours.

Next: Explore Old City's lively nightlife scene. Walk around the residential neighborhood and stop into outdoor cocktail bars, Irish pubs and trendy lounges, and grab a barstool next to locals to find the latest neighborhood hot spot. Time: 2 hours.

View one of the most impressive private collections of early French-Modern and Postimpressionist paintings in the world — including important works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Degas, van Gogh and Seurat — at the Barnes Foundation, reopening 2012. Time: 2 hours.
PMA City Food Tour
Next: Enjoy a delicious and entertaining lunch on a Center City food tour. Several companies offer guided tours that will have you tasting Philadelphia favorites, with stops for cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and chocolate. Time: 2.5 hours.
PMA The Franklin Institute
Next: At the renowned science museum The Franklin Institute, you can ride the Sky Bike, a bicycle suspended on a 60-foot wire suspended 28 feet above the floor of an atrium, test your aviation skills in a real jet flight simulator, and explore Colonial and groundbreaking American scientist Benjamin Franklin's experiments in electricity. It's free to visit the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, the only government memorial outside of Washington, D.C., in the rotunda of the building. Time: 1.5 hours.
PMA Manayunk
Next: Dine al fresco in the riverside mill town of Manayunk. Choose from more than 900 outdoor seats at the historic district's taverns, ethnic eateries and creative cafés. The hilly town is popular among cyclists and hosts festivals throughout the summer, including the Manyaunk Arts Festival in June. Time: 2 hours.

Smiley face Valley Forge
Visit 3,600-acre Valley Forge National Historical Park and see where General George Washington, America's first president, and his Army survived the famous brutal winter of 1777–1778 during the War of the American Revolution. At the site, where nearly 2,000 soldiers died, you'll find Washington's restored stone headquarters, reconstructed log huts and numerous statues. Time: 3 hours.
PMA Lancaster
Next: Learn about Pennsylvania's Amish community in Lancaster County. The Amish live in a fascinatingly simple world that harkens back to the 19th century, usually traveling by horse and buggy and refusing modern conveniences. Stroll charming villages and shop for Amish-made quilts and cheeses, or learn about Amish culture through buggy rides, craft demonstrations and historic building tours. Time: a full day or more.
