Jean Farquhar, Concierge, Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia
In her 20 years at the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia, concierge Jean Farquhar has seen a great change sweep through the city. Philadelphia gets more respect than it did two decades ago, she says, citing world-class museums, safe and walkable streets, and of course, the dynamic restaurant scene. Here you’ll find Jean’s favorite recommendations on how to immerse yourself in the spirit of the holiday season in Philadelphia.
Q: Why do you love Philadelphia?
A: I love Philadelphia for the mix of history, culture and sports the city offers. I also enjoy the fact that our city is in close proximity to both the mountains and the ocean, which makes it ideal for convenient family vacations.
Q: What are your favorite sites in Philadelphia?
A: The National Constitution Center, which is entertaining for all ages and offers a great historical perspective; Old City, which is a fun neighborhood that has a great mix of history, entertainment, and culture; our wonderful museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Academy of Natural Sciences and The Franklin, all of which always have fascinating exhibits. Right outside the city is Longwood Gardens, which I enjoy visiting for its majestic gardens and wonderful special events.
Q: How would you describe Philadelphia to someone who has never been here before?
A: Philadelphia is a very friendly city that is easy to navigate, especially on foot. We have a wonderful mix of old and new in Philadelphia, with our rich historical and cultural assets.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Philadelphia during the holiday season?
A: I enjoy the various holiday activities at the Kimmel Center and the Academy of Music, along with the festive displays at Macy’s and the houses in Fairmount Park. Of course, I love the Tea in Wonderland that we host at the Four Seasons during the holidays – the combination of the Pennsylvania Ballet Dancers and the excited children is something I look forward to each holiday season.
Q: What is your favorite Philadelphia restaurant, that’s NOT in the Four Seasons Hotel?
A: I enjoy a diverse group of restaurants, including Amada, Moshulu, Devon and Le Castagne. Each of these restaurants offers excellent food and fun atmosphere, and I would recommend them to our guests.
