Now groups can go behind-the-walls through one of the nation’s most historic prisons in solitary confinement cells that once held some of the country’s most notorious criminals. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, Eastern State Penitentiary today is a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. This was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.Tour Length: 60 minutes

Mural Arts Experience
Paint the TownThis official Mural Arts Program experiential tour occurs in four parts: Exploration, Presentation, Painting, and Reflection. Groups begin with a guided exploration of 20-30 neighborhood murals including intimate details about the program, creative process, mural making techniques, and Philadelphia history. Then it’s off to the artist’s studios for a presentation by a professional muralist who can tailor their discussion to reinforce themes important for your group such as respect for self and community.
Now the group is ready to paint. Artist and assistants will provide instruction for your group to begin painting a real mural on a specially prepared canvas set up like a large paint-by-number project. All supplies are provided, including gloves and aprons to keep clothing clean. Paint does not wash out so guests should dress appropriately. To end the experience, guests will embark on a final mural tour en-route to their desired location in the city, seeing another 10-20 murals. This provides time for additional questions and reflections.
Tour Length: Varies (2-4 hours)
Tour Price: Varies
Details: Tours can be adjusted to fit your schedule; for example painting a mural can occur at a location of your choice.
