Andy Warhol Like You’ve Never Seen
June 26-September 12, 2010 | PAFA
One name that is synonymous with modern American art is Andy Warhol. Best known for his multi-colored silk-screens of repeating, iconic American images, Warhol truly catapulted Pop Art in the 1960s and became as famous as the people and brands he portrayed in his work. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ (PAFA) new exhibit “Andy Warhol Polaroids and B&W Prints” displays dozens of photographs donated by the Warhol Photographic Legacy Program for a unique and personal look into the life and art of one of America’s most memorable artistic figures.
Unseen by most of the public, these photographs and Polaroids not only detail some of Warhol’s more commercial projects, but also his regular daily life. Many of the Polaroids were used as studies for future works by Warhol and feature fellow members of the art world. Some of his muses highlighted in the exhibit include designer Carolina Herrera, choreographer Martha Graham and singer Paul Anka. From Liza Minnelli to people of the streets of New York City, the faces and places on display show the universe through Warhol’s lens.
PAFA is one of 183 institutions in the U.S. to possess Warhol’s photography. Though Warhol is known best for his bright colors, these photographs express a more subtle and raw depiction of Warhol’s world. See them soon before their “15 minutes” are up!
