In 1984, the Anti-Graffiti Network started as an effort to clean up Philadelphia. In that endeavor, MAP was born. Led by a local artist, the program encouraged young graffiti artists to create murals instead, allowing them to exercise their creative abilities. The program gave these youth structure and a sense of empowerment as their work helped to better their communities. The murals are designed to educate, beautify, inspire, and raise awareness. Many are rich in cultural heritage and focus on the deep ethnic roots of Philadelphia’s diverse communities.
The artists, who now come from a variety of artistic backgrounds, immerse themselves in a community and draw their ideas from its neighbors. When a piece is completed, it becomes a part of that neighborhood – a symbol of its pride and its ability to change.
The murals are also a permanent part of the vibrancy of Philadelphia. The entire city has become a canvas for eclectic public art. Among the hustle and bustle of Center City, the excitement of South Street, and the charm of Old City are colorful murals as unique as the neighborhoods they enhance. Many of the murals also feature local heroes and famous Philadelphians who have helped to change the world.
The three words that define MAP are “Art Saves Lives.” When you take a Mural Arts Tour of Philadelphia, you’ll not only see some of our city’s most famous and inspirational murals, you’ll learn about our city’s art, pride, and history.
