Maxine Ballen
President & CEO
New Jersey Technology Council

Maxine Ballen is the founder, president and CEO of the New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC), a private, nonprofit member organization composed of technology-intensive and associated companies. NJTC is Ms. Ballen’s third nonprofit start-up in support of entrepreneurship. She was a pioneer in creating the highly successful Business Development and Training Center in Pennsylvania and the South Jersey Entrepreneurs Network. She received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Pennsylvania in 1991 and in New Jersey in 1996. In 2002, the Women’s Fund of New Jersey presented Ms. Ballen with its “Women Advancing Technology” award. Also in 2002, NJBIZ designated her as a “Superstar” and among its “Women of Influence.” South Jersey Magazine listed her among its “22 People to Watch in 2002.” She received a BS from the University of Pittsburgh and an MS from Suffolk University.

J. Robert Beck. M.D.

J. Robert Beck is Vice President for Information Services and Chief Information Officer at Fox Chase Cancer Center. A Senior Member of the faculty, he also serves as Director of the Program in Evaluative Sciences. In these roles he has responsibility for bioinformatics, biostatistics, health services research, clinical computing and administrative information technology. Dr. Beck's received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1978 and served his residency in pathology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. From 2004 to 2005, he chaired the strategic planning activities within the NCI's initiative on national standards and infrastructure for cancer research and clinical trials. His major research focus is on decision modeling in medicine, where his work has centered on the development and refinement of methods of outcome assessment. Two products of his early work, the Declining Exponential Approximation of Life Expectancy (DEALE) and the Markov process outcome model, are now standard methods in clinical decision analysis.

Michael D. Becker

Mr. Becker has more than 15 years of experience as a drug developer, entrepreneur, company executive, Wall Street securities analyst, and financial adviser.  Before establishing MD Becker Partners LLC in 2008, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of several publicly-traded biotechnology companies including commercial-stage Cytogen Corporation and development-stage VioQuest Pharmaceuticals, Inc.  While at Cytogen, Mr. Becker raised in excess of $130 million in new capital through both public offerings and private placements and in-licensed Caphosol©, a novel treatment for oral mucositis and xerostomia.  Mr. Becker is past Chairman and member of the board of trustees with BioNJ and member of the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) and the Pharmaceutical Consulting Consortium, Inc. (PCCI). He placed as a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in both 2004 and 2005 and was listed in BusinessWeek's "CEO's 40 and Under" article in December 2006. He attended DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois.

Frederic Bertley, Ph.D.

The Franklin Institute

Dr. Frederic Bertley oversees both the Center for Innovation in Science Learning and the Franklin Center at The Franklin Institute.  The Center for Innovation in Science Learning (CISL) is aimed at improving the quality of science education throughout the K-12 population, and augmenting science literacy for both families and the non-scientist adult population.  Dr. Bertley oversees research-based projects as well as program development and implementation – including gender equity in science, K-12 professional development, community outreach, and web-based educational resources. Additionally, he directs the Franklin Center, which includes the Library, Curatorial/Collections, the prestigious Franklin Awards Program and the long-running Journal of The Franklin Institute.  

Dr. Bertley is presently shepherding The Franklin Institute’s groundbreaking partnership with The Science Leadership Academy, a public magnet school dedicated to inquiry and project-based science and technology learning, as well as its PACTS after-school science and engineering program for urban youth.  Additionally, through the NSF funded “LEAP into Science” program, Dr. Bertley’s group has partnered with the Free Library of Philadelphia to create a nationally replicable model museum/library partnership to promote family and after-school student engagement and achievement in science through literacy.  Also under Dr. Bertley’s purview is the coveted Franklin Institute Awards program.  This almost 200 year old celebration of the most luminary scientists is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world.  Dr. Bertley is also the Executive Editor of the Journal of The Franklin Institute, the nation’s second oldest science journal in continuous publication.

Prior to joining the Institute’s leadership team, Dr. Bertley was a research scientist at Harvard Medical School, researching HIV/AIDS vaccines.  

Fritz Bittenbender

Fritz Bittenbender is Vice President of Government and Corporate Affairs at Cephalon, one of the fastest growing biopharmaceutical companies in the country.   Previously, Mr. Bittenbender served as president of Pennsylvania Bio.  A spokesman and advocate for the state’s more than 2,000 bioscience-related companies and nearly 84,000 employees, he directed the association’s federal and state government relations activities, communications strategy and overall industry relations and membership.  Prior to Pennsylvania Bio, Mr. Bittenbender served under the administrations of Governors Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker, having worked on developing programs that would utilize the tobacco settlement funds to support the bioscience industry.

Catherine Bonuccelli, M.D.

Dr. Catherine Bonuccelli has been Vice President, External Scientific Affairs of AstraZeneca PLC since 2003. Dr. Bonuccelli also serves as Vice President of External Scientific Affairs of AstraZeneca U.S., responsible for building and sustaining relationships with Healthcare Customers, including managed care Companies, Employer Groups, and the FDA. Most recently, she held the position of business strategist, US Drug Development, AstraZeneca PLC. When Zeneca merged with Astra in 1999, Dr. Bonuccelli was named global product director for Accolate. Dr. Bonuccelli is certified by the National Board of Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics, and licensed by the State of Delaware, Division of Professional Regulation. Additionally, she is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Thoracic Society.  Dr. Bonuccelli holds a Bachelors Degree from Georgetown University, where she Graduated Magna Cum Laude, and a Medical Degree from Johns Hopkins University.

J. Michael Bowman

Since 1998, Mike Bowman has served as Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Delaware Technology Park Inc. (DTP), a collaboration of the State of Delaware, University of Delaware, and high technology industries such as advanced materials, life sciences, and information technology. In 2007, he was elected President of the Board of the Association of University Research Parks which includes about 100 US and Canadian research parks.  In 2005, DTP was recognized as Outstanding Research Park of the Year for the nation. The 40-acre park is home to 54 companies, the Delaware Biotechnology Institute’s (DBI) 750 employees, and graduated 20 spin out companies. DTP and DBI have had a direct role in the creation of nearly 15,000 jobs in Delaware over the last 10 years.  Mr. Bowman also serves as a board member on five technology- based companies and is a member of the national Council on Competitiveness.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and attended graduate business and financial programs at Wharton and Columbia. In 2000, he was presented the UC Distinguished Alumnus Award.

George Burrell joined PRWT Services, one of the nation’s fastest growing minority enterprises with an expanding family of companies in 2008 as General Council and Executive Vice President of Business Development.  PRWT service offerings include a wide range of business process outsourcing, large-scale facilities management, and manufacturing and distribution for the life sciences industry.  For eight consecutive years, PRWT has been named one of Black Enterprise’s Top 100 Industrial/Services.  A former professional football player and Wharton-trained businessman who has run an investment company, George Burrell studied law at University of Pennsylvania and eventually opened his own firm.  He then served as an elected member of Philadelphia City Council and as secretary for external affairs for Mayor John Street. His public service spans more than three decades.

Arthur Caplan, Ph.D.

Dr. Arthur Caplan is the Emanuel and Robert Hart Professor of Bioethics, Chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and the Director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  Author or editor of 25 books and more than 500 papers in referred journals of medicine, science, philosophy, bioethics, and health policy, he writes a regular column on bioethics for MSNBC.com and is a frequent guest commentator on various media outlets.  Dr. Caplan is the recipient of many awards and honors including the McGovern Medal of the American Medical Writers Association, Person of the Year in 2001 from USA Today, one of the  50 most influential people in American health care by Modern Health Care magazine, one of the 10 most influential people in America in biotechnology by the National Journal and one of the  10 most influential people in the ethics of biotechnology over the past 10 years by the editors of the journal Nature Biotechnology.  He holds seven honorary degrees from colleges and medical schools and is a fellow of the Hastings Center, the New York Academy of Medicine, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Geert Cauwenbergh, Ph.D.

In 2008, Dr. Geert Cauwenbergh was appointed Chairmen and CEO of Rhei Pharmaceuticals. Prior to joining Rhei, Dr. Cauwenburgh founded Barrier Therapeutics, a company developing therapeutic agents for skin disease. Under his leadership, Barrier Therapeutics went public and raised $250 in capital, evolving it from an R&D organization to a commercial company. Dr. Cauwenbergh also served as Vice President of Technology of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Consumer and Personal Care Products Companies. The creation of Barrier Therapeutics as a separate company devoted to the clinical development and commercialization of dermatological products in-licensed from J&J affiliates is a direct consequence of his efforts in this area. Earlier in his career, Dr. Cauwenbergh held positions in sales, and national and international marketing, and was responsible for the successful global introduction of Nizoral® (ketoconazole).  He has authored more than 100 publications and co-authored several books. He received his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from the Catholic University of Leuven, Faculty of Medicine, where he also completed his graduate and undergraduate work.

Dr. Michael J. Cleare is Associate Vice Provost for Research and Executive Director of the Center for Technology Transfer at University of Pennsylvania. Working closely with senior administrators, Dr. Cleare has reorganized and guided Penn research-commercialization activities to improve service offerings to investigators while yielding new resources to sustain, diversify, and grow the research enterprise. In addition, Dr. Cleare guides Penn’s industry-sponsored research collaborations, particularly as University intellectual property plays an increasingly important role in the formation of academic-industry partnership agreements.  Dr. Cleare managed Columbia University’s highly successful research-commercialization endeavors for seven years, has published more then 40 articles and papers and holds 10 patents.

Richard T. Collier

Richard T. Collier has served as Élan Corporation’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel, since November, 2004.  Prior to joining Élan, Mr. Collier was Senior Counsel at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP and Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Pharmacia (now Pfizer), after being in that same position at Pharmacia & Upjohn.  Mr. Collier also spent 11 years at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Inc.  Previously, he was in private practice after having served with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justice. Mr. Collier is a graduate of Temple University and also earned his Juris Doctor at Temple University.


Anne-Marie Corner

Anne-Marie Corner heads a wholly owned subsidiary of Cellegy, focused on the development of products in the areas of reproductive health and infectious disease.  She oversees all areas of women's health product development, including new drug development, clinical and regulatory affairs, grant and finance operations, and business development.  Ms. Corner is former President and CEO of Biosyn, where she raised significant amounts of venture capital and grant funding, completed the acquisition of three major HIV-related compounds, and successfully led the progress of Biosynís lead HIV prevention drug from discovery through to Phase III clinical trials.   Ms. Corner has more then 20 years of experience in biomedical research and drug development, and is considered a leader in the development of HIV preventive drugs.  Among her many awards and honors,  she has been recognized as Ernst & Young 2001 Entrepreneur of the Year; the Committee of 200 Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year; one of the Fifty Best Business Women in Pennsylvania; and was given a Philadelphia Woman of Distinction award by The Philadelphia Business Journal.

Stephen M. Curtis, Ph.D.

Dr. Stephen M. Curtis is the fifth president of Community College of Philadelphia, inaugurated in August, 1999.  An experienced college administrator and a former professor of music, Dr. Curtis previously served the State University of New York as President of Hudson Valley Community College from 1996-1998; The City University as Acting President of Queens College from 1994-1995; Acting President of Borough of Manhattan Community College from 1992-1994; and Dean of Academic Affairs at that same institution from 1988-1992.  At Community College of Philadelphia, Dr. Curtis has fostered the College's growth as a leader in workforce and economic development, as the critical link between Philadelphia's public and parochial schools and baccalaureate programs in the region's other colleges and universities, as a committed proponent of educational technology, and as a proactive educational institution "ahead of the curve."

John M. Daly, M.D.

An internationally renowned oncologic surgeon, author, researcher and academician, Dr. John M. Daly became Dean of Temple University School of Medicine in 2002.  A prolific researcher and author, Dr. Daly has 368 publications to his credit, including dozens of book chapters and several books.  An expert in clinical nutrition and parenteral hyperalimentation, Dr. Daly is a past president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (1985-1986). He is also former President of the Society of Surgical Oncology (2002-2003); the New York Surgical Society (1998-1999); and the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Cancer Society (1992-1993).  He has served on governance boards and in leadership capacities for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, the American Board of Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and a dozen other professional associations.
 
Lisa Davis

Prior to her current appointment as Vice President of AstraZeneca Lisa Davis served as a high level counselor to The American Association of Retired People's (AARP) Chief Communications Officer and its Executive Team. Before becoming Senior Advisor, she served as AARP's Director of Public Relations.  In October 2003, PR Week named Ms. Davis to their "In-House A-List," PR Week's designation of the top 20 in-house communicators. In November 2003, she was named by the same publication as one of the "15 Leading Lights" in the industry.  While at the American Bar Association, she handled communications on the U.S. Supreme Court nomination and hearings of Justice Clarence Thomas, the Rodney King riots and perestroika, the opening of the Soviet Union. Prior to AARP, Ms. Davis served as National Deputy Press Secretary for the Clinton/Gore '96 Re-election campaign. Ms. Davis was also Press Secretary for the Democratic Leadership Council and its think tank, the Progressive Policy Institute.

Bob Dayton

Bob Dayton heads the Delaware BioScience Association, a member trade association for the life sciences in the State of  Delaware.  Delaware Bio has successfully grown to more than 75 members in its first two years and works locally and regionally to support the growth of bioscience research and commercialization.  With more than 30 years of experience in both the private and public sectors and having worked under two Governors, Mr. Dayton has assisted with formation of new companies, expansion of existing firms, and relocation of businesses to the State of Delaware.  In 2007, Dayton joined a small group of local business people to found MidCoast Community Bank in Wilmington, Delaware, where he sits on its board.  Other affiliations include the Delaware Valley Innovation Network, Greater Newark Network, Bio-Life-Tech Venture Fair, Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress, and Delaware State University’s Innovative Technologies Breakfast.

John Elliot joined Cherokee Pharmaceuticals LLC in 2008 as President of the newly formed subsidiary of PRWT Services, Inc. Mr. Elliot leads a division comprising of a staff of nearly 400 employees at the state-of-the-art API manufacturing facility of products/antibiotics for humans and animals in Riverside, PA.

Prior to joining Cherokee Pharmaceuticals, Mr. Elliot worked for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for over 25 years and became a highly regarded leader in the field.  As Senior Vice President, Primary Supply & Antibiotics, Mr. Elliot oversaw operations in eight countries, including the United States, Belgium, Singapore and Australia, with a total staff of nearly 7,000 employees.  

Mr. Elliot received a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1973 from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, ScotlandShe claims that at school, fellow students' drinking alcohol was a problem and eating disorders were common. She said academic competition was tight and the overall environment was "a pressure cooker."

Mickey Flynn

Dennis M. "Mickey" Flynn is president of Pennsylvania Bio, the statewide trade association representing Pennsylvania's biosciences community. He serves as spokesman and advocate for the Commonwealth's industry and is responsible for working with the Board of Directors to set Pennsylvania Bio's strategic direction.  Pennsylvania Bio serves as a catalyst to ensure Pennsylvania is a global leader in biosciences.  Mr. Flynn was a founding board member of Pennsylvania Bio, serving as the Association's first board chair. He has served as a member of the Biotechnology Industry Organization's (BIO) Emerging Companies Committee, and he is a past member of the Board of Directors for BioAdvance, the Biotechnology Greenhouse of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He recently served as the co-chair of the executive and sponsorship committees for the BIO 2005 annual meeting held in Philadelphia, and he was the host committee co-chair for the BIO 1996 meeting in Philadelphia.

Margaret Foti, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Margaret Foti joined the AACR as an Editorial Assistant for Cancer Research under the editorship of her first mentor, Dr. Michael B. Shimkin She was rapidly promoted to the position of Managing Editor under Dr.  Sidney Weinhouse, and was the youngest Managing Editor of a major scientific journal in the country. Her contributions and guidance to subsequent Editors-in-Chief have enabled Cancer Research to become the most highly cited cancer journal in the world.

Dr. Foti's has received many national and international awards for her contributions to cancer research including: the Ville de Paris Award for her contributions to the field of oncology; the Cino del Duca Award for raising public awareness of cancer research globally; the Community Caring Award from the William S. Graham Foundation for Melanoma Research; the American Society of Clinical Oncology Special Recognition Award for her work in advancing clinical cancer research; and most recently, the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of American Cancer Institutes for contributions to the nation's cancer centers.


Vicky L. Funanage, Ph.D.

Since 2000, Vicky Funanage she has been the Director of Biomedical Research for the Nemours Foundation Although located in Wilmington, Dr. Funanage oversees all operating functions for the Delaware and Florida research programs and is also responsible for spearheading research partnerships and collaborative initiatives with the scientific, medical and educational communities. In addition, she is Director of Medical Research, Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Lab (genetests.org), and Chief of the Musculoskeletal Inherited Disease Research Program, at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.  She is also Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.

Ongoing research conducted in Dr. Funanage's laboratory (Musculoskeletal Inherited Disease Laboratory [MID]) involves projects designed to provide benefit to children afflicted with neuromuscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, and myotonic dystrophy.    Dr. Funanage is frequently published in peer-reviewed journals and is an editorial reviewer for six prestigious journals.  She is a member of the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers, the International Society for Heart Research, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Human Genetics and the American Society for Cell Biology.

Philip P. Gerbino, Pharm.D.

Dr. Phil Gerbino is president of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, which includes the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He is a national leader in the pharmacy profession, having served as president of the American Pharmaceutical Association in 1990 and president of the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice from 1986 to 1987. He has served on the U.S. Pharmacopoeia Advisory Panel on Geriatrics and as chairman of the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy. He is a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, a fellow of the American Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management, and a fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.

Anthony P. Green, Ph.D.

Anthony P. Green, Ph.D., who has over 30 years experience in the biotechnology industry, with a specialization in the research, development and commercialization of cutting-edge technologies primarily in small, emerging companies, has been appointed Vice President of Regional Technology Initiatives for Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP).  Dr. Green was most recently Distinguished Scientist, Scientific Affairs, for Puresyn, Inc., a Malvern, Montgomery County, PA company that BFTP/SEP had provided early seeding. The company develops, manufactures and markets state-of-the-art products and services for the separation and purification of nucleic acids and other biological molecules. Along with Mickey Flynn, former President of Puresyn and now President of Pennsylvania BIO, Dr. Green helped established Puresyn as the leader in the field of manufacturing technology for gene-based products for applications in DNA vaccines and gene therapy

Ann Weaver Hart, Ph.D.

Ann Weaver Hart was elected the ninth president of Temple University on May 4, 2006. She is the first female president in the University’s 125-year history. Since assuming the presidency on July 1, 2006, Hart has undertaken an ambitious agenda that builds upon Temple’s many areas of excellence to position it as a national and global leader in higher education, research and service. Foremost is her commitment to preserving and expanding Temple’s mission to provide access to excellence for talented and highly motivated students regardless of status or station in life, and to strengthen ties to Temple’s communities by creating a culture of engagement at all levels.
Hart’s agenda for Temple also calls for strengthening Temple’s leadership in research, innovation and entrepreneurship, advancing the ambitious capital improvements underway and creating a culture of philanthropy to ensure a secure financial future. At the same time, she is expanding and strengthening Temple’s international mission in teaching and research and reinforcing the University’s role in the global community.

Debbie Hart

Biotechnology Council of NJ, Inc.

Debbie Hart serves as the President of BioNJ (formerly the Biotechnology Council of New Jersey). She worked alongside New Jersey's leading biotechnology industry CEOs to establish the Biotechnology Council of New Jersey in 1994. BCNJ's mission is to promote a business and public policy environment in the State of New Jersey and beyond that enhances the growth and prosperity of New Jersey's biotechnology companies. Debbie served as a member of Governor Jon Corzine's Economic Growth Transition Team and was appointed by former Governor James E. McGreevey to the Jobs Growth and Economic Development Commission. She served on the Steering Committee for the Prosperity New Jersey Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Cluster study that was conducted by Professor Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School. Dr. Philip Johnson serves as the Chief Scientific officer, Executive Vice President and Director of the Stokes Research institute at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In his role as CSO/ Director, Dr. Johnson oversees the research enterprise, which includes 16 departments that support over 1600 faculty and staff engaged in a wide array of basic, clinical and translational research activities. In addition to his administrative duties, he also directs his own research laboratory, which over the last decade, has focused on gene transfer technology for use in vaccine antigen delivery, culminating in the development of a candidate HIV-1 vaccination that is now in Phase II human clinical trials. He published oer 120 papers in scientific literature and has received over 45 million of peer-reviewed grant support over the past 15 years.
Dr. Johnson received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of South Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by pediatric residency and infectious diseases training at Vanderbilt University.


Russel E. Kaufman, M.D.

Russel E. Kaufman, M.D., became the seventh president and CEO of The Wistar Institute in June 2002. In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Kaufman also maintains an active research program at the Institute, investigating the genetics of blood diseases and cancer.
With long-standing interests in both basic and applied cancer research, Kaufman has served as a scientific advisor in these areas to the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, and a number of other organizations. He has received awards for his work from the March of Dimes, the Arthritis Foundation, and others. He was named a Scholar of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America, one of that organization's most prestigious awards. He was also tapped as one of the first Searle Scholars. The Searle Scholars Program supports top-flight academic research in biomedicine and chemistry.

Currently, Dr. Kaufman serves on the boards of the University of the Arts, Osage Venture Partners, and the Pharmaceutical Safety Institute. He is also board chairman for BioAdvance, the Biotechnology Greenhouse of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and he chairs the American Cancer Society’s Council for Extramural Grants, a committee of senior scientists that recommends funding levels for cancer research proposals submitted to the society.

Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. is in his seventh year as President of Saint Joseph's University.  Father Lannon began his term at Saint Joseph's as its 26th President in July 2003.  Previously, he served as the Vice President for University Advancement and before that as the Associate Executive Vice President, both at Marquette University.  Father Lannon has a doctorate in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.  Father Lannon serves on the boards of Marquette University, Santa Clara University, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), and the City Avenue Special Services District.  He serves as Chair of the Board of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and Vice Chair of AICUP.

Father Lannon has studied and written on Catholic Identity at Jesuit Universities.  He is a native of Mason City, Iowa, attended Creighton University as an undergraduate, where he was student body president, and later returned to Omaha, Nebraska as President of Creighton Preparatory School.  Father Lannon entered the Society of Jesus in 1977; was ordained a priest in 1986; obtained two master’s degrees from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology (now Boston College School of Theology and Ministry); earned a doctorate in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University; and has a professional diploma from Fordham University

Jeffrey C. Lerner, Ph.D.

Dr. Jeffrey C. Lerner has served since 2001 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to this, he held the position of Vice President for Strategic Planning for 17 years. He played the key role in setting the course for ECRI Institute’s transition from its origins as a medical device evaluation laboratory to a broader health research organization that assesses clinical procedures and drug therapies in addition to medical devices.

Dr. Lerner maintains a special interest in assistive technology for the disabled and has served as principal investigator on projects for the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Easter Seals Society. He was the first Director of ECRI Institute’s Center for Healthcare Environmental Management™, which offers programs worldwide. He developed ECRI Institute’s annual technology assessment educational conference.

Dr. Lerner served as Chair for seven of his 22 years on the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Health Care Academy, a program for high school students living in poverty areas. He is also an Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics of the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Lerner authored the Journal of Legal Medicine’s Book Review Essay of “Rescuing Science from Politics, Regulation and the Distortion of Scientific Research,” edited by Wendy Wagner and Rena Steinzor.

Dr. Long is a professor of Pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine and chief of the Section of Infectious Diseases at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. She has been chair of the first subboard of Pediatric Infectious Diseases of the American board of Pediatrics, chair of the board of directors of the American Board of Pediatrics, president of the national Pediatric Infectious Disease Society and president of the medical staff of St. Christopher’s. She is chief editor of the textbook Principals and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and is an associate editor of The Journal of Pediatrics and the Red Book (the pediatricians “bible” on vaccinations), published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Long has been named “Top Doc” in Philadelphia annually since 1987, is the author of more then 200 papers in medical literature and has performed more then 50 honorary named lectures and visiting professorships in the U.S. and internationally.

Brother Michael McGinniss

Brother Michael J. McGinniss became La Salle University’s 28th President on July 1, 1999.  Under Br. Michael’s direction, the University developed a new strategic plan and significantly increased enrollment, giving, and alumni involvement in the life of the University. In addition, the University built and opened a new residence hall for 428 students and an adjoining dining facility in 2005 and expanded the Bucks County Center in 2006. In cooperation with the Board of Trustees, Br. Michael launched Shoulder to Shoulder, a fundraising initiative with a $25 million goal for the construction of a new science and technology center and the strengthening of the endowment for student scholarships. Completed in 2007, this major gift initiative raised more than $28 million. At the same time, the University expanded its campus by approximately 30 acres with the purchase of the Germantown Hospital property and two adjoining lots. In addition, in 2008 the University opened a Montgomery County Center and launched its latest strategic plan, The Will to Excel.

Brother Michael served for five years as President of Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from La Salle in 1970 and both his master’s degree and Ph.D. in theology from the University of Notre Dame and has more than 35 years of teaching experience on the collegiate and graduate levels, having not only taught at his alma mater, but also at Washington Theological Union and the Summer Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University of Chicago. He serves on the boards of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, the American University of Rome, Manhattan College, La Salle College High School, the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, and the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Schwarz has received both public and private funding for work that has examined the issues of injury and its prevention in urban minority communities, public policy approaches to adolescent violence, and

Michael Seiden, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Seiden, a board-certified medical oncologist, previously led the gynecologic cancer program at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and served as chief of the clinical research unit in Massachusetts General Hospital's Division of Cancer Medicine.  Dr. Seiden's research focuses on clinical and translational studies in ovarian cancer. His laboratory has also begun studies to identify and characterize the ovarian-cancer stem cell.  Dr. Seiden's previous responsibilities included serving as associate professor of medicine at Harvard;  physician coordinator of the cancer stem-cell project at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC); principal investigator for the ovarian cancer tumor biology laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital; and co-principal investigator of DF/HCC's NCI grant for a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in ovarian cancer.  His recent honors include being named as Massachusetts Breast Cancer Scholar in 1995 and again in 2000 and 2001. He has successfully competed for a Clinical Interface Award funded through the Doris Duke Foundation. He has also been an invited lecturer at the international ovarian cancer forums sponsored by England's Helene Harris Memorial Trust in 2001, 2005 and 2007. Seiden is active in many professional organizations and editorial boards and serves on national and international committees and advisory boards.

Stephen Spinelli, Ph.D.

Dr. Spinelli became president of Philadelphia University in 2007, previously serving 14 years at Babson College where he chaired the entrepreneurship division, was director of the Arthur M. Lisa Staiano-Coico, Ph.D.

Prior to coming to Temple in 2007, Dr. Staiano-Coico was Dean of the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. At Cornell’s Weill Medical College, she served as vice provost for medical and external affairs, division chief of surgical research, and held professorships in microbiology in surgery and dermatology, public health, nutritional sciences, and fiber science and apparel design.  Dr. Staiano-Coico is past president of the International Society for Analytical Cytology, and directed a $160 million research consortium. She is a widely published expert in skin cell biology, wound healing and burns and conducts research on adolescent drug and alcohol abuse. A native of Brooklyn, she earned her B.S. from Brooklyn College and a doctorate in microbiology and immunology from Weill. She was appointed to the Board in 2007 by the presidents of Drexel University, Temple University, and the University of Pennsylvania

Susan C. Taylor, M.D.

Dr. Taylor is a University of Pennsylvania and Harvard trained physician who is an internationally recognized expert in dermatology. Dr. Taylor has been a guest on national news shows including the Today Show, the Today Show Weekend Edition and is frequently interviewed by local medical reporters both in Philadelphia and New York.
In January 1999, Dr. Taylor was appointed the Director of the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, the first of its type in the nation. In this capacity, her responsibilities include patient care, grant writing, conducting clinical trials, teaching and speaking engagements. Dr. Taylor has practiced for 13 years at Society Hill Dermatology and has been awarded more than two million dollars in research grants.  Dr. Taylor has assumed leadership roles within the American Academy of Dermatology where she is Chair of the Women's Health Task Force, a member of the Health Care Deliver Committee and a member of the Minority Student Mentor Program.

Stephen S. Tang, Ph.D.

Dr. Stephen Tang became President and CEO of the Science Center in February 2008, bringing to the position a wealth of professional experience in academia, professional services, and private industry.  Most notably, Dr. Tang is the first president in the Science Center’s 47-year history to have not only led a company through venture funding and an initial public offering, but to also serve as a senior executive with a large life sciences company as it acquired and integrated smaller start-ups.  Dr. Tang earned a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University and an MBA for Executives from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Virginia with a BS in Chemistry.

Thomas R. Tritton, Ph.D

Thomas R. Tritton is president and CEO of the Chemical Heritage Foundation. He is the second president of CHF, succeeding Arnold Thackray, who founded the organization in Philadelphia 26 years ago and will continue with CHF as chancellor.  Dr. Tritton served as the 12th president of Haverford College from 1997 to 2007. He is a cancer chemotherapy research expert whose work has been funded for the past 25 years by the American Cancer Society and the National Institutes of Health.  A past deputy director of the Vermont Comprehensive Cancer Center, a designated center of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Tritton is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology.
Before assuming the CHF presidency, Tritton spent the fall 2007 semester at Harvard University as president in residence at the Graduate School of Education. He worked with graduate students in higher education, wrote and taught about leadership and the college presidency, and designed a new course, “Social Justice.”

Steven Weinberger

Dr. Steven Weinberger is Senior Vice President for Medical Education and Publishing as well as Deputy Executive Vice President at the American College of Physicians (ACP), Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and Senior Lecturer on Medicine at Harvard Medical School.   A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Weinberger has received many teaching awards at Harvard Medical School and at Beth Israel Hospital/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.  He is the author of a popular textbook entitled Principles of Pulmonary Medicine, which is now in its fifth edition and has been translated into several foreign languages.  He has written numerous original and review articles as well as multiple chapters for the leading textbooks of internal medicine. Dr. Weinberger is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians, and he is now serving as President of the Harvard Medical Alumni Association.

In his current national leadership position in medical education, Dr. Weinberger directs the American College of Physicians’ Medical Education and Publishing Division.  He also serves as the senior educational representative for the American College of Physicians, working with other internal medicine and educational stakeholders on educational policy, redesign of residency training, and other initiatives for educational reform.

George Wohlreich, Ph.D.

Dr. Wohlreich is the inaugural incumbent of the Thomas W. Langfitt Chair as the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.  In addition, he is a part-time staff psychiatrist at Pennsylvania Hospital and a Professor of Psychiatry (Adjunct) at the University of  Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  While always maintaining a private practice, Dr. Wohlreich has served as the medical director of three different psychiatric hospitals, and has been the executive medical director and/or regional medical director for two managed behavioral health organizations and one academic independent practice association/physician–hospital organization. In addition, he has been a Senior Examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. for more than 18 years, served on an examination writing committee for this Board, and has served as an ACGME site surveyor.

A Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, Dr. Wohlreich is also an elected member of the American College of Psychiatrists and the American College of Psychoanalysts.

Stephanie A. Zarus, Pharm.D.

Dr. Zarus earned her B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. She also completed a residency in pharmacy administration at the V.A. Medical Center in Philadelphia. She has served in various capacities at the University of the Sciences, including Associate Dean of the School for Advanced Learning and Senior Director of Marketing and Vice President for the Office of Professional Programs, where she designed and implemented educational programming for adult learners and served as an adjunct faculty member. Dr. Zarus joined the founders of excelleRx before its inception and has served in many roles including Director of Marketing, Senior Director of Quality Assurance, Pharmacist of Record and Chief Operating Officer. Currently, Dr. Zarus is the Chief Performance Officer responsible for corporate compliance including legal and regulatory affairs; educational programming and staff development; licensure and accreditation; and, quality assurance and performance benchmarking. In addition, Dr. Zarus serves as the Vice President on the Board of Directors of the ExcelleRx Institute and was selected 2006 New Jersey’s Best 50 Women in Business by NJBIZ.
