Philadelphia's Connections
To the United Kingdom
The ties between Philadelphia and theU.K. began in 1681, when King Charles granted
land to William Penn, an English Quaker, for
what was to become Philadelphia. When Penn
arrived in 1682 with his vision of religious
tolerance and a "greene countrie town,"
he wrote pamphlets extolling the area's virtues
and encouraging his fellow countrymen in the
British Isles to make their homes here. Many
heeded his call, including English, Scots,
Scotch-Irish, and Welsh settlers who joined
others from the European continent. Immigration
from the British Isles continued into the
19th century, when the mills along the Delaware
and Schuylkill rivers attraced artisans and
skilled tradeworkers.
A new $450-million, 785,000-square-foot, four-level International terminal provides increased space and services for international travellers. The airport offers a selection of shopping, dining and tourist services, including currency exchange.
